Problem Mare Solutions

The practice offers a comprehensive program for diagnosis and improvement of fertility in problem broodmares.  Investigative procedures include ultrasound, endoscopic, histopathologic, microbiologic and serologic examinations.  Some mares may benefit from corrective surgical procedures such as Caslick, urethral extension or repair of fistulae resulting from birth trauma.

Pre and post-breeding examinations are an important tool for identifying those mares with poor uterine immune mechanisms and high susceptibility to infection.

A problem that is gaining more of our attention and understanding is the high risk mare for pregnancy loss.  These are mares that settle in foal without difficulty but lose the pregnancy at a later stage, generally with no symptoms of impending abortion.  These mares can be monitored to assist in the retention of the pregnancy.  Techniques include hormone (progesterone) assay, transabdominal ultrasound, microbiological and haematological survey.
